About University
In Myanmar, nurses are health care personnel who play an important role in providing health care to the community. Previously, there was no specific nursing training school in the country but nursing training courses were opened attached with the hospitals at states and divisions. In the projects of public health extensively carried out by the Ministry of Health, to promote the ratio of doctor and nurse, it was necessary to produce more nurses. Moreover, it was also necessary to upgrade the standard of Nursing Education. To fulfill the needs, with the joint-co-operation and collaboration between Myanmar government and Japanese government, the nursing training school was started to establish in March, 1984 and completed in February, 1986, spending altogether 122.96 million kyats, including the donation of Japanese government, i.e.¥2870 ( 100.45 million kyats ) and that of Myanmar government, i.e. 22.51 million kyats.
It is the leading university for the development of Nursing Education. It is situated at No. 677 / 709, at the corner of Bogyoke Aung San Street and Phone Gyi Street, Block No. (11) in Lanmadaw Township. It has an area of 6.971 acres wide.
Therefore, the University of Nursing was initially established as Nurses Training Centre (NTC) in July, 1986 offering nursing diploma course. On 5th November 1991, the training school was upgraded to the first Institute of Nursing in Myanmar and also B.N.Sc (Generic) and B.N.Sc (Bridge) courses were commenced. In 2005, the Institute of Nursing was promoted again to the University of Nursing, Yangon.
Because of the increasing number of nursing students, the extension building on the other side of the road was built in March, 1996 and it was opened on 5th June 1997. It is situated between Bogyoke Aung San Street and Min Ye Kyaw Swar Street, Block No. (9), Lanmadaw Township. It has an area of 8.644 acres wide.
Now the University of Nursing, Yangon, is offering various undergraduate and post graduate courses. The university has been producing many proficient and skillful nursing personnel who can provide high quality nursing care to the community.
